Codeine is an opioid pain reliever commonly used to treat mild to moderate pain, as well as to relieve coughing and certain types of diarrhea. It is often prescribed as a standalone medication or in combination with other drugs, such as acetaminophen or aspirin, to enhance its pain-relieving effects.
How Codeine Works:
Codeine works by altering the way the brain and nervous system respond to pain. It binds to opioid receptors in the brain, which helps reduce the perception of pain and can also have a calming or sedative effect.
Uses:
Pain Relief: For mild to moderate pain, often prescribed for conditions such as muscle pain, headaches, or post-surgical pain.
Cough Suppressant: Often combined with other medications like promethazine to treat persistent coughing.
Diarrhea: In some cases, it may be used to reduce diarrhea, as opioids can slow bowel movement.
Common Dosages:
For pain relief: 15 mg to 60 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed (not to exceed 360 mg in 24 hours).
For cough: Typically 10 mg to 20 mg every 4 to 6 hours.
For diarrhea: The dosage will vary, depending on the specific formulation.
Side Effects:
Common: Drowsiness, constipation, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.
Serious: Respiratory depression (slowed breathing), dependency or addiction, especially with long-term use, overdose, and allergic reactions.
Warnings:
Risk of Addiction: Codeine is classified as a Schedule II or Schedule III controlled substance due to its potential for abuse and addiction.
Breathing Issues: Codeine can cause severe respiratory depression, particularly when combined with alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other CNS depressants.
Not for children under 12: Codeine is not recommended for use in children under 12 due to the risk of severe respiratory problems.
Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider and never exceed the recommended dose. If you have concerns or experience adverse effects, contact your doctor promptly.
